ABSTRACT
This article gives a short introduction to the ISO standard 14001 subject to the international certification of environmental management systems. It delivers some indications on the standard's growing international importance, presents its requirements and finally interprets them within the context of typical salt mining processes as an exemplary to the application of ISO 14001 to mining activities.
